A July afternoon on Marco announces itself: the thunderhead builds white over Roberts Bay, the wind swings, and two inches fall in forty minutes onto lawns that were scheduled to be watered that evening anyway. Thompson Irrigation is in the business of making sure they are not — setting controllers to the season, wiring in rain sensors, and tuning zones so the turf drinks what it needs and no more. Between storms the work is repair: broken heads sheared off by a mower, valves that stick, lines that leak somewhere under the St. Augustine, arcs that have wandered until half a bed goes dry. New zones go in where plantings have outgrown the old layout, and coverage gets checked on foot rather than guessed at. When it is right, the island yard is uniformly green in May and never soggy in August, and no one has to think about it once.
