First light on the Caloosahatchee at Fort Myers Shores is a long silver seam, and the river fog lifts off it before traffic on Palm Beach Boulevard picks up. Cal's Cutting is usually rolling by then, mowing the river neighborhoods while the grass is still cool and cutting clean. Edging along the drive, trimming the fence corners, clippings blown off the walk and the driveway, the same finish on every yard. Grass out here runs hard from May to October and barely pauses the rest of the year, so the route keeps coming back around. The pleasure of the job is pulling away and watching the stripes hold all the way out to the mailbox.
