Late in the afternoon in downtown Fort Meade the low brick storefronts throw shade across the sidewalk and the day finally gives back a degree or two. That is usually when Cross Cut Lawn & Landscape is closing out a route, the last pass laid down on the diagonal, the trimmer working the fence corners, the blower sending grass off the concrete and back into the yard where it belongs. Mowing and edging are the spine of it, done on a schedule so a lawn is never rescued, only kept. Yards around here run to St. Augustine and bahia both, and each one wants its own height and its own week. The satisfaction is plain: a straight edge along the walk that still holds at the next visit.
