Fog sits on the Peace River most winter mornings, and Fort Meade wakes up underneath it before the sun burns it off the pastures. Berrien's Lawn starts in that gray hour, when the dew is still heavy and the mower leaves a darker stripe behind it. The work is straightforward and taken all the way through: mowing, edging, trimming around posts and beds, then clearing the clippings off the drive and walk. By midmorning the streets off US 17 have that combed look, every yard squared to its own sidewalk. This is the oldest town in Polk County, and it wears a sharp lawn well.
