Sod comes off the pallet cool and smelling of the field it was cut from. Sod Kings South Florida lays it early, before the Davie sun takes on its full weight — pieces butted tight, seams staggered, edges knifed in around the walk and the drive, then watered until the ground goes dark. This is sand-and-marl country on the edge of the Everglades, where a thin patch can go bare in a season, and there is something worth standing around to watch in a yard that was dirt at seven and lawn by noon. After the laying comes the keeping of it: regular mowing, clean edges, trimming around posts and beds. Down Orange Drive the old groves are long gone, but green still takes hold fast here when it is set down right.
