Hedge lines are architecture. Along the quieter streets running north from Clearwater toward Palm Harbor, a viburnum wall held flat and a row of sabal palms cleaned of their old fronds do more for a house than any amount of decoration. The work runs from that scale all the way down to the weekly: mowing, edging, trimming, beds kept clean, mulch refreshed once the sun has bleached it. Plantings get chosen for this heat and this sand, then kept in proportion year after year rather than allowed to swallow a window. Landscape is the slow art of deciding what a place will look like in five years and then showing up in the meantime.
