Late August, and thunderheads build over the Gulf side all afternoon while the island holds still and steams. Tropical Property Care moves through it — mowing thick summer growth, cutting hedges back to a line, shaking dead fronds down out of the palms, bagging whatever the last squall knocked loose. The lanes on Big Pine run out toward Bogie Channel and No Name, and every yard along them keeps its own argument going with the vines. Winning that argument is a weekly conversation, never one afternoon's work. The end of a day looks like this: edges crisp, drive blown bare, the sky finally letting go.
