April announces itself along the Brandywine, where the cherries above the park path go off all at once and the grass underneath them wakes up hungry. Let's Get Green builds the whole year forward from that moment — overseeding thin ground, aerating soil that spent the winter packed tight, feeding the lawn so the color comes up even instead of in patches, and staying after the weeds before they set seed. Then comes the long steady stretch of mowing and trimming, week after week, holding what spring started. The city's grass is cool-season stock asked to survive a mid-Atlantic August, so green in June is easy and green in late August is the actual craft. By November the leaves are off and hauled away, and the lawn goes into the cold with nothing left lying on it.
