Out at Oak Orchard the August air comes in thick off the water and the cicadas start their racket well before seven. De Leon Landscaping starts before the cicadas do, because on the low ground east of Millsboro the only cool part of an August day is the part before breakfast. Grass there grows fast in the humidity and burns quick in the sun, so the cut gets left a little tall and the trimming gets done with care around the shell drives and the bulkhead ends. By mid-morning the yards are done, the walks are swept, and the heat can have the rest of the day. Nothing about it is complicated — it is simply a lawn made neat, on the hottest week of the year, by people who showed up while it was still gray out.
