From the Earth

About From the Earth

On a June evening in Frankford the fireflies come up out of the grass about the time the last lawn gets finished. From the Earth tends that grass — mowing through the long Sussex summer, edging the walks, trimming what the deck leaves behind. Everything here grows out of sandy farm ground that has fed this county for generations, and a lawn is only the smallest field a person keeps. Feeding it, seeding it in the fall, raking the leaves off before winter — it is all one long conversation with the same soil. The reward is a yard that reads even and full from the road, and stays cool underfoot at dusk.
