Windsor wakes early on the Day Hill side, where wide lots and long approaches have to be clear before the first cars turn in. Butler Co is a snow removal operation working those hours — plowing drives and lots, clearing walkways, laying down salt and sand where wind scours a surface to glass. Storms come up the Connecticut River valley with room to run, and the flat ground north of the center takes the full width of them. There is a plain pride in a finished pass: black asphalt with a clean windrow banked at the edge, done while the town is still dark and quiet. Winter here is a job with a deadline, and the deadline is sunrise.
