On an August evening around Lake Winnemaug the light goes long and gold, and every lawn in Watertown shows exactly how it has been kept. J M Landscaping Inc mows for that hour: clean lines, a crisp border along the drive, hedges squared without being severe. The route runs from the town green out along Route 63 and down into the neighborhoods toward Oakville, one street to the next through the growing season. Cleanups bracket the year, brush and winter grit out in April, leaves and last cuttings out in November. In between there is mulch, seed, and the string trimmer doing the fussy work nobody notices until it goes undone.
