At the upper end of Lake Waramaug the land tilts away into old woods and older pasture, and keeping any of it open is real work. That is the trade here — mowing lawns on a regular cycle, cutting back the brush and field edges that would swallow a yard in three summers, trimming close around walls and outbuildings, mulching beds, and clearing the leaf and limb load a Litchfield County autumn drops all at once. Warren properties tend to be large and uneven, part lawn and part meadow, and the interesting decision is always where one ought to stop and the other begin. A morning of mowing on high ground with the lake showing silver through the trees is not a bad way to earn a living. The reclaimed edge, the opened field, the yard given its view back — that is what the day is for.
