Warren has more dirt road than pavement and more sky than either. Up on the high open ground toward Above All, a storm shows itself a half hour before it lands, which is useful when there is plowing ahead — driveways in this town run long, steep and gravel, and they get cleared with that in mind, sand and salt where the grade demands it. In the green half of the year the same trucks turn to mowing, trimming and the cleanups a hill-country property needs after mud season and after leaf-fall. Lawns here share their edges with hayfield and stone wall, and the line between kept and wild is drawn by hand, one pass at a time. Winter or summer the best moment is the same one: standing at the top of a drive that is finally open, or looking back down a lawn that is finally even.
