The old streets off East Main were built for workers with room behind the house, and plenty of those long backyards still grow tomatoes every August. Uncle Ben's Organic Gardening/Landscaping works that ground in Torrington — garden beds turned and weeded, borders shaped, mulch laid where it will do the most good. The lawn side is steady and unglamorous: mowing on a rhythm, edges kept, corners reached. In April the winter debris comes off; in October the beds are cut back and the leaves are gone. There is a plain satisfaction in walking out at dusk and finding the yard exactly the way you left it.
