At two in the morning Main Street belongs to the plows, the Warner's marquee dark, the whole downtown reduced to falling white and a single set of tracks. J. Fragale & Sons, Inc works that hour — driveways, lots and walks opened across Torrington while the storm is still coming down, so morning finds the city usable. Snow up in the Litchfield hills lands heavier and stays longer than it does closer to the shore, and the job gets measured in how wide the passes are and how little ice is left behind. Sand goes where the grade turns treacherous, and the banks get pushed back for the next one, because there is always a next one. Winter here is a season of long nights, and somebody has to be out in them.
