A February storm reaches Tolland from the west, up over the ridge, and settles in for the night the way northeastern Connecticut storms do — steady, unhurried, filling every driveway on the hill. Pikes Landscaping runs straight through it, plowing drives and lots, opening walkways, laying salt and sand where the grade and the shade conspire against traction. A long night has its own rhythm: headlights, falling flakes, the banks pushed back a little further with each pass. Then the light comes up gray over the fields and the town finds its roads and drives already usable. Nobody applauds that, and it is still the part worth being out for.
