Winter dusk comes to Thompson at four o'clock, and the sky over the western hills goes orange while the storm is still working. Sunset Nurseries takes the snow calls — plowing driveways and lots, clearing walkways and steps, spreading salt or sand on the slick spots that appear when the day's melt refreezes. There is a rhythm to a long night: the same drives in the same order, then around again a few hours later if it keeps falling. What you want at sunrise is pavement, banks pushed back for the next one, and nobody stuck anywhere. Snow is the only work here, and in a Thompson winter that is plenty.
