Snow reaches Sterling Hill before it ever touches the valley floor, and the ridge roads off Route 14 hold onto it the longest. GroundScapes runs the plow through the hours nobody else is awake for, opening driveways, turnarounds and lots so the first trip out is a straight shot to bare pavement. Sand goes down where the grade tips into a bend; walks and steps are cleared by hand, because a truck cannot do everything. There is a particular satisfaction in a dooryard opened up while the porch light is still on. The route covers Sterling, Oneco, Voluntown, Plainfield and across the state line toward Foster.
