Stafford Springs sits low along the Willimantic River with the mill walls standing over it, and cold settles into that hollow and stays; a storm that gives Hartford rain gives Stafford six inches. G's American Landscapes plows straight into that, opening driveways, pushing lots, clearing walks and entries up the hill roads and out toward Staffordville. The village streets are narrow and old, so the job here is as much about where the snow goes as where it came from. On a good run the last drive gets finished as the sky turns the color of pewter above the water. Everyone else simply finds their way out into the morning.
