When the fields on the South Windsor plain are put to bed and the last netting comes off the poles, the equipment does not get to rest — it just changes jobs. Winter here is plow work: clearing driveways and parking lots, opening long farm and rural drives, pushing snow into piles that leave room for the next storm, clearing walkways, and sanding or salting where it freezes hard overnight. Farm ground teaches you what wind does with snow, and a driveway laid across an open field has to be plowed with the next drift in mind rather than just this one. There is a plainness to the trade that suits the place — go out when it snows, go out again when it snows again. Come April the same ground turns green and the cycle hands itself back to the fields.
