August in the neighborhoods off Nevers Road is sprinklers at dusk, basketball hoops in the driveway, and grass that grows an inch anytime it rains. Keeping up with that is steady weekly work: mowing, edging along walks and driveways, string trimming around fences, posts and play sets, mulch and bed maintenance, and the cleanups that come with spring and with the last of the leaves. Suburban lots here are full of things to steer around, and the sign of a good visit is that none of them show a nick. There is something satisfying about a street where three or four houses in a row have all been cut on the same day — the whole block lifts. Small, but you can see it from the corner.
