Somersville wakes to the Scantic running low and dark under the old mill windows, and on a plowing morning the sound of a blade reaches the street before the light does. Beane's Lawn Service works both ends of the Somers year: snow pushed off driveways and walks while Main Street is still blue, then grass cut clean through the long green stretch that follows. There is a particular satisfaction in a dooryard opened up before anyone has to think about it, salt down, the path wide enough for two people to pass. Come June the same roads look nothing alike, and the work turns to mowing, trimming, and edges drawn straight along the walk. Two halves of one calendar, and both of them end with a place that looks cared for.
