In late May the floodplain along the Farmington River in Simsbury turns a green so saturated it looks lit from underneath, and a well-kept lawn is simply that green, held steady all summer. This is landscape work at the property scale — mowing on a regular cycle, edging beds and walks into clean lines, trimming, mulching, planting bed maintenance, spring and fall cleanups, and leaf removal once the maples let go. The pleasure of the trade is in the finish: the stripe that runs straight across a side yard, the crisp shoulder of mulch meeting turf. Valley properties range from tight village lots near the center to wide lawns backing onto woods, and each wants a slightly different approach. The work is measured out one property at a time, week after week, until the ground goes still in November.
