White Hills sits high enough that snow reaches it a half hour before the river and lingers a day after. All Dry Services of Shelton is a snow removal outfit working those upper roads and the flats below them, plowing driveways, cutting walkways open, shoveling steps and treating the shaded ice that never quite lets go on its own. A January night up there is all blue shadow and drifting powder; by the time the sky turns gray, the pavement is dark, wet and passable. The measure of the night's work is simple — doors that open, cars that get out, a mailbox anyone can reach. Shelton has more long, steep aprons than a stranger would guess, and each one wants its own approach.
