Down at Harbor Park the Connecticut runs wide past Middletown's riverside, rowing shells going out at first light through the warm months and the water turning pewter by December. Then the hardscape: patios and walkways in paver, bluestone and flagstone, retaining walls that solve a grade change, driveway and pool-deck pavers, brick and stone masonry for steps, columns and fire pits — all of it excavated deep and compacted first, because Connecticut's freeze-thaw finds every shortcut eventually. In winter the plows move before business hours, clearing parking lots, drive lanes and sidewalks and treating them with rock salt, calcium chloride and liquid de-icers, on a seasonal contract or per event.
