Everybody in Terryville knows the trick of this town's weather: it can be rain down in the valley and inches piling up here, because Plymouth sits a few hundred feet nearer the sky. That difference is the entire business of snow removal — plowing driveways open, clearing walks and steps by hand, laying salt and sand on grades that hold ice long after the main roads have gone wet again. Hill driveways get cleared with the next storm in mind, banks pushed well back so there is somewhere to put the following six inches. By the time the trucks on Route 6 have finished their runs, the driveways off it are already open. Plymouth is where winter arrives early and leaves late, and the work is scaled to that.
