Out along Route 14 the land lifts into hayfield and hedgerow, and when a squall crosses it there is nothing to slow the wind — snow moves sideways and packs hard against anything standing. Snow removal is the whole of the work here: driveways opened wide enough to turn around in, walkways and steps cleared to bare surface, sand and salt where a shaded stretch will glaze over by morning. Long driveways in this part of Plainfield are their own species, two hundred feet of gravel between the road and the door. Getting one open at four in the morning, banked neatly so there is room for the next storm, is a small and complete accomplishment. Then on to the next, headlights swinging, before the town wakes.
