Snow reaches Rogers Lake before it reaches the rest of Old Lyme — you can watch it cross the water first, a grey curtain drawn over the north end, and then the driveways begin to disappear. Roche's Scape and Design keeps after it, plowing and clearing so a drive is passable and a walk is walkable by the time the household wakes. The roads up that way bend and climb through the woods, and every one of them ends in a dooryard somebody has to get out of before the day starts. There is real satisfaction in one clean pass down a long drive: the pavement dark again, the banks squared off, the property looking as though the storm asked permission first. It is unglamorous work at an unglamorous hour, and it is exactly what a shoreline winter asks for.
