The Silvermine River runs shallow over ledge along Norwalk's northern edge, and in June the light comes down green through the maples above it — exactly the light a perennial border was made for. The rest of the calendar is upkeep — spring clean ups and fall clean ups, beds edged and weeded and mulched, plants, shrubs and ornamental trees trimmed and pruned back to shape, fertilizing programs for lawn and planting alike. Gutters get cleared too, because a garden under a clogged gutter never quite comes into its own. The route runs from Norwalk out through Darien, New Canaan, Stamford and Greenwich, residential and commercial ground both.
