New London gives up its ground slowly — ledge, old fill, buried water lines, packed clay under streets that have been running down to the Thames a very long time. Peter S. Turello LLC works below that surface and above it: excavation and site work, electrical and sewer and water trenches, catch basins, culverts, swales, curtain drains and storm separators, mains and laterals, hydrants and meter pits and manholes. Aboveground it turns to paving and concrete — parking lots and their maintenance, roads, curbs, sidewalks, driveways, slabs, foundations, floors, loading docks, handicap ramps and head walls — alongside landscaping that reaches from loam and seed to hay and sod, hardscapes, stonewall installation and repair, planting, spring and fall clean-ups and playground installation and resurfacing. Winter is commercial only: plowing, snow removal, sand and salt, debris removal and emergency storm clean-up, with residential snow work left off the list. On a raw March morning with the river running gray past Fort Trumbull, a trench backfilled square and a lot swept open are their own reward.
