Evening comes late to the shoreline in August, and the light off Alewife Cove runs long and gold across the lawns that step down toward the water between New London and Waterford. ALPS works that stretch of coast — mowing and lawn maintenance through the growing months, design work when a yard is ready to become something other than what it is, plows out when the Sound sends its winter weather ashore. Salt air here is hard on turf and generous to it by turns, and a lawn kept close and even reads like a held note against gray shingle and hedge. Out toward East Lyme, Groton and Mystic, the crew that edges a bed in July is the same one that knows where a driveway drifts in January. That continuity is the whole idea: one property, one set of hands, all the way around the year.
