At three in the morning in a February storm, Johnson Street in Middletown's north end is one of the few addresses with its lights burning. This is Middlesex Ice Control, the winter arm of David A. Lenz Landscape Service, where brine tanks are filled and salt is loaded while the snow comes sideways across Route 9. The work is liquid and granular ice control — anti-icing liquids laid down before the storm arrives, Magic Salt blended from dry mined rock salt and Magic-0, granular melts made pet safe and plant safe for walkways and doorsteps. Alongside the product come the tools to spread it: Camion brine makers and sprayers, power packs, skid sprayers, storage tanks and handling gear, plus Fluid Film to keep chlorides off the plow trucks that live outdoors all winter. When the snow finally lets go, the same liquids and spray rigs turn to summer dust control on gravel roads, quarries, construction sites, riding arenas and solar farms.
