Two weathers govern Madison: the soft one that drifts in off the Sound, and the hard one that comes down the East River valley when the wind turns north. American Landscape and Lawn Science works both — mowing, edging and cleanups from the first green along the Boston Post Road to the last leaf-fall by the town green, and plowing when the shoreline takes its share. Coastal storms arrive wet and heavy, the kind that packs solid at the foot of a driveway, so early clearing counts for more than fast clearing. There is a particular hush to a January morning near Hammonasset — gulls pushed inland, everything muffled — and a walkway shoveled down to the brick before anyone is awake. By July the same properties want a straight edge and an even cut, and the work simply changes tools.
