Ledyard still keeps an up-and-down sawmill on Iron Street that runs when the water is high, which tells you what sort of town this is — old ground, worked ground. Luke's Lawn Care works it in both directions: mowing, trimming and edging through the green months, leaf and brush cleanups in fall, then plowing, shoveling and sanding when winter closes in. Yards here are pieced in between ledge, oak and walls somebody else stacked by hand, so no two get mowed the same way twice. A mower going across a Ledyard hillside in June is about as good as summer sounds. In January that same hillside only asks to be passable by six.
