Most of what Advanced Earthwork Specialists LLC does in Lebanon disappears the moment it is finished — a trench backfilled, a drain buried under new topsoil, a septic field graded smooth over the glacial till this corner of Connecticut is made of. That is the quiet pleasure of the trade: the cellar hole squared, the water sent somewhere it belongs, the site swept clean before the last truck pulls off the road. Lebanon's ground does not soak up rain so much as move it downhill, so grading is half the job and drainage is the other half. Excavation, land clearing, demolition, trench digging and septic work fill the open months; when a storm comes down out of the northwest, the same machines are out on parking lots, access roads, loading areas and walkways before the first shift arrives. Everything gets judged, in the end, by what stands on top of it.
