Hartland is a town in two halves, East and West, with the Barkhamsted Reservoir and the Tunxis State Forest filling the space between. Up on this ridge winter comes early and leaves late, and Route 20 can be white while the valley below is only wet. Long dirt drives and open hilltop yards are their own kind of problem, and solving them is the point. A cleared lane through fresh snow up here is worth as much as a mown field in June.
