Early summer mornings on the east bank of the Connecticut River come up soft and green, the Hartford skyline across the water still holding a little haze. Martinez Yard Works works that side of the river and out through Manchester and Glastonbury — mowing, running the trimmer into the corners a mower can't reach, and cutting an edge that gives a lawn a clean, defined border against every walk and drive. Beds get a layer of mulch to hold moisture and keep weeds down; hedges and shrubs are trimmed and shaped until they read as deliberate again. Some days the job is a floral garden designed around what a homeowner already loves, or a landscape plan that makes the most of a property's shape. Other days it is a fence going up around a small garden or an expansive backyard. Either way the crew leaves at midday with the lines straight and the grass standing up.
