On the Prospect Avenue side of the city, where the rose arches at Elizabeth Park come into full bloom in late June, the lawns around them are living on a schedule of their own. Lawn Fertilization keeps that schedule: five applications a year, from the balanced spring feeding that holds color and lays a crabgrass pre-emergent, through the iron and lime of midsummer, to a winter feeding that sends strength back down into the roots. Where turf has thinned, core aeration pulls plugs two or three inches deep to break thatch and open the root zone to water and air, and power seeding cuts slits and drops seed straight into them for the fastest recovery a weak lawn can get. Broadleaf weeds are spot-sprayed, disease is met with a fungicide application when it appears, and limestone is spread to sweeten soil gone acid under years of growth. Out along the wooded edges of a property — the first ten feet of grass, the leaf litter, the stone walls and woodpiles past it — tick management treats the ground where the trouble actually lives. At the end of every visit the hard surfaces are blown clean, for the look of it and to keep material out of the waterways.
