The work begins with soil rather than spectacle: a soil test, then lime for pH, gypsum where pets and wildlife have left their marks, worm compost and odorless chicken manure pellets worked into tired ground. Pre-germinated overseeding goes down in a tight weave that crowds out dandelion and crabgrass, and milky spore takes on grubs and moles without asking anything of the water table. Beds are weeded, redefined and topped with triple-processed hardwood mulch or stone, while shrubs are transplanted, replaced, or simply given a haircut. On the bigger days there are flagstone walkways to set, decorative retaining walls to build and stone borders to square off against the grass. By July a repaired lawn is thick enough to cross barefoot, and that is the entire point of the exercise.
