Higganum Creek still drops through the old mill cove on its way down to the Connecticut, and the village that grew up around that water is the ground Apical Land Care keeps. Their year opens with spring clean-ups — winter branch and matted leaf out of the beds, fresh mulch laid in — then settles into mowing, edging and the clean sweep of clippings off every hard surface. Come autumn they aerate, lime, fertilize and over-seed so the turf goes into the cold thick and even, and through the deep months they still come by every other week to carry off whatever the wind has left. Between those poles they build the lasting things: brick, slate, stone and block patios, walkways, and retaining walls that hold a Haddam slope steady. And when weather closes in, the same crew is out salting, sanding, shoveling and plowing before anyone has to walk on it.
