By mid-July the lanes running out toward Noank and Groton Long Point smell of hot privet and low tide, and the lawns between there and the Mystic River are standing at a steady three and a half inches. Earth, Turf, & Snow mows weekly or bi-weekly at that height on purpose — deeper roots, cooler soil, close trimming and a clean edge where turf meets bed. They build the rest of the yard as well: patios, paver driveways, retaining walls and outdoor living spaces, privacy screens, perennial gardens and pool plantings put in as full installations. New lawns go down as same-day sod or the old way with seed and straw, and brush clearing pushes back invasives and debris until a property is larger than it was. Spring and fall cleanups handle leaf removal, bed edging, fresh mulch and cutting the ornamental grasses, and the plows go out over Groton City, Poquonock Bridge, Long Hill and beyond when the shoreline finally turns white.
