North Granby Road climbs toward the Hartland line past ledge, gravel and stone-walled woodlots — ground that decides what can be built on it long before anyone draws a plan. Tom Fredo Builders works underneath the finished thing: excavation and site work, septic systems repaired and replaced, water and sewer connections, drainage laid to move rainfall off a lawn and away from a basement. Late autumn is their honest season, when the leaves are down and every grade shows, and road building and final grading close a project out before the ground turns hard. They take land development from subdivisions and master-planned communities through to commercial, institutional and agricultural sites, and they keep building lots and acreage on hand for people still hunting for the piece of ground itself. Then the fleet changes over — plows sized for everything from a farmhouse drive to a full commercial site, with sand, salt and de-icing running behind them. In a town shaped like this one, a good winter often comes down to who got the hill open first.
