October arrives in Glastonbury all at once — one cold night, and the maples along Main Street let go until every yard between there and Hubbard Green is ankle-deep by Saturday. C&J Fair Lawn takes that season down to bare turf: leaves removed, bushes pruned back, a small tree cut and its stump taken out of the way of the mower for good. Summer keeps a simpler rhythm and just as much satisfaction in it — mowed, edged, trimmed, mulch topped up dark against the shrub line so the whole front reads clean from the road. They will haul the yard junk off when they go, which is its own quiet relief. Then winter, and the drive is open before the coffee is.
