Bluestone has a color it only shows on a late-August afternoon in Essex, when the light comes low off North Cove and the wet-cut edge of a slab goes blue-green as river water. Braley & Finnegan LLC works in that material and in the ground beneath it — excavation first, then masonry, then the patios and walkways that will carry a household's summers. A design begins as plantings drawn on paper and ends as garden beds that look like they grew into the shoreline rather than arrived on a truck. There is lawn installation for the bare ground left behind, and fertilizer programs to carry the new grass through the seasons that follow. Between Essex, Westbrook and Old Saybrook the crew reads each yard's slope and drainage before a single stone is set.
