From a yard on Post Office Road they take on site preparation, grading and paving, underground utilities, demolition, and roads and bridges — highway roadwork one month, a full commercial site or a residential housing development the next. There is a real pleasure in a subgrade cut true, in a trench backfilled so nothing settles later, in a fresh mat of pavement drawn tight to the curb line. Come January the same machines turn to snow removal, and the lanes and lots open again before the first shift arrives.
