East of the village the roads narrow and dip past Freshwater Brook and the hedgerows, and in a snowstorm the dusk arrives around four in the afternoon. D.M. Tree is on those roads with the plow when it does, pushing the banks back and opening drives so headlights can find the way in. Salt follows at the culvert dips and the shaded curves, where an afternoon thaw refreezes overnight into something meaner than snow. A storm can drop a foot on Enfield without a single household losing its morning, and that is a thing worth doing well. When the sky clears and the fields go blue-white, the pavement underneath is already dark.
