Late in October, when the meadow grass along the Hockanum finally quits growing and the light comes in low and sideways off the Connecticut River, the work turns with it — rakes out of the truck, blades checked, the whole calendar tipping from planting toward clearing. United Landscaping & Tree Service works both halves of that year in East Hartford: grass seeding and sod, spring and fall cleanups, tree and shrub planting, tree and stump removal, then patios, walkways, retaining walls, fence installation, driveway paving and drainage, and snow plowing and shoveling once the valley locks up cold. There is a plain, physical pleasure in this line of work — a retaining wall that holds its line straight through a freeze, a walkway still sitting true come April, a drive scraped clean and gritty underfoot while the streetlights are still burning over Main Street. A yard hauled bare of leaves lies open and breathing again, silt-dark and ready. Across East Hartford and the Connecticut towns around it, that is the shape of the year, one season handed to the next.
