There is a week in East Hartford when the last leaves let go over the Hockanum meadows and the river light turns thin and silver, and the work turns with it — rakes and blowers set down, the plow blade pulled out from under its tarp. N & G Landscaping LLC keeps both ends of that week: spring and fall cleanups, mowing and fertilizing through the green months, snow removal when the valley goes white. In between they build the things meant to stay put — patios, retaining walls, fire pits and sidewalks, fences in vinyl, wood, or chain-link, sod and shrubs and rock gardens, stone set by hand, mulch laid dark against a fresh edge — and they take down the trees and stumps that have finished their turn. Along these mill-town streets and out across the flat river bottomland, the reward is plain and physical: a bed edged clean enough to throw its own shadow, a drive opened before the first car of the morning, a yard that holds its season.
