Mid-May on East High Street, and half of East Hampton is driving home with flats of annuals on the passenger seat while Lake Pocotopaug finally warms enough to sit beside. Paul's & Sandy's Too is where those flats come from — a garden center of annuals and perennials, herbs and vegetable plants, hostas and groundcovers, native plants for pollinator gardens, and shrubs and trees from a local grower. Out back is the bulk yard: eight kinds of mulch, witch hazel and hemlock and cedar and forest blend among them, alongside screened topsoil, compost, stone dust, driveway mix, crushed stone, washed and screened sand, and decorative stone from river jacks to barn red, loaded into your own truck or delivered to the door. The hardware side carries everything the yard doesn't — garden tools, grass seed, fertilizers, organic gardening supplies, bagged mulch and stone, patio blocks and pavers. Then the calendar turns and the same lot becomes a farm stand, then Pumpkintown U.S.A., then the Christmas Ride. It is the place that gives a town somewhere to begin every project.
